Buy Giant Elk Antler Burr
Buy Giant Elk Antler Burr are the biggest burrs we’ve ever seen! Measuring at 3 inches or more, Giant Elk Antler Burrs will put your dog’s chewing skills to the test! Great for large to giant breeds or any dog with aggressive chewing habits, our Giant Elk Antler Burr will last for hours on end. Nature made the burr to be highly durable, as this is the portion of the antler that attaches to the skull and must stand up to constant stress.
Product description: Giant Elk Antlers are created with very large dogs in mind. These cubs are often the most energetic chewers in the pack and require the thickest and longest-lasting part of the antlers. These present more of a chewing challenge than our split elk antlers, but are less dense than our whole deer antlers.
Our giant elk antlers are either cut from the base of the antler and include burrs, or are a long piece of main beam. If you prefer one over the other, please indicate so in the notes at checkout.
How do dogs chew antlers?
Whole Antler: When you let your dog chew on an antler, he will try to get the pulp out, starting with the exposed pulp at the ends of the whole chewing antler. When it no longer reaches the pith, it gnaws the outer edges of the antler and wears them away. The antler does not break or splinter; rather, it separates in small fragments that can be safely swallowed.
Split antler: Split antler is a dog’s favorite, but split chewing may not last as long. Dogs chew the pith, leaving a hollow outer edge. It is usually safe for them to continue chewing on these empty shells. However, if the dog starts chewing on the sides, where longer pieces can break off, the chew needs to be replaced with a new one. It is normal for small chips to come from the ends of the gum and these small chips are not dangerous for your dog. Most chips are so small that they easily pass through a dog’s digestive system or even dissolve.
If you have a large breed dog, when the piece of antler has shrunk enough to fit in its mouth, it is time to remove it. You can either throw it away or, even better, give it to a friend with a smaller dog!
What are burrs/buttons?
I have never bought an antler. What should I order?
If your dog has never had an antler, it’s a good idea to start with a split piece – easy access to the bone marrow gives him a chance to see how good it is. Many customers only buy splits. Dogs love them and some dogs don’t feel like working on whole pieces to get the pulp. Others just buy whole antlers and their dogs are happy as can be. No two dogs are alike, so the best recommendation we can give is to try both split antlers and whole antlers to see what your dog prefers. Once you see how your dog likes it and how aggressively he chews, you can adjust the next order accordingly.
